​The NEW-Watch Widget shows for each region of Australia's National Electricity Market (NEM), and the other main grids across Australia, how much electricity is being generated by each fuel type, using data published by several organisations. In the east, the NEM covers only ½ of the Australian land-mass but accounts for roughly 90% of electricity consumed across the country. In the west, the WEM is the largest grid (in energy terms) in the rest of the country, supplying the city of Perth and surrounding areas of south-western WA. The widget shows an instantaneous rate of production (i.e. MWh per hour – or simply MW) and utilises three sources of data:

​Renewable energy resource data is available for download to all for free from this site.  IRENA’s Global Atlas for Renewable Energy allows users to download renewable resource data from selected datasets for offline analysis.  Up to now, only data from selected publicly-funded sources was available.  This has changed now that Vaisala, a global leader in environmental and industrial measurement, has made its average annual data on solar irradiation and wind speeds available for download through the Global Atlas.  This capability gives developers, policy makers, and researchers access to globally consistent resource data that can be used in setting policy and performing initial project planning and prospecting.
